A Year of Community Impact

During the year, St Catherine’s College residents showcased an enduring commitment to community engagement, environmental stewardship and fostering positive change with initiatives ranging from recycling efforts to conservation field trips.

Recycling for a Greener Future

St Catherine’s College residents from our UWA and Curtin campuses collected 24,880 used cans and bottles for Containers for Change in 2023. The proceeds were used to plant 690 trees, contributing to a more sustainable and verdant future.

Running with Purpose

Residents demonstrated their dedication to a global cause by participating in the Wings for Life run, the world’s largest running event funding spinal cord research. 27 residents from Curtin and some from Crawley joined, and notably, Jameson Vodden completed an impressive 30km during the run, while Patrick Lee showcased resilience by covering 27.3km at the event.

Mentoring Minds, Shaping Futures

Five St Catherine’s College residents volunteered as mentors for at a high school. Through mentorship, these residents imparted knowledge and served as role models, leaving a lasting impact on the students they guided.

Advocates for a Greener Tomorrow

More than just a group, the Climate Crew at St Catherine’s College Curtin is a force for change, dedicating over 80 hours to heighten sustainability awareness among college residents. Through creating impactful posters and videos, distributing shower times to encourage water conservation and actively managing recycling efforts for Containers for Change, the Climate Crew has helped to weave sustainability into the fabric of College life.

Environmental Rehabilitation on the Swan River

Residents took their commitment to environmental stewardship a step further by actively participating in restoring the Swan River’s shores. Residents engaged in weeding, tree planting and clearing rubbish. The cumulative effort amounted to over 200 volunteer hours.

Answering the Call for Blood Donation

The Australian Red Cross - Lifeblood set up a table at the College to promote blood donation and invite residents to sign up. A total of 35 residents signed up to donate blood during lunchtime, demonstrating their commitment to community health and their readiness to make personal contributions to a greater cause.

Gondwana Link Ongerup Field Trip

St Catherine’s College residents embarked on transformative field trips in April and July as a part of the Gondwana Link Project. The April trip focused on collecting seeds for replantation, maintaining closures within the Yongergnow Australian Malleefowl Centre and learning about Aboriginal Bush Tucker.

In July, the emphasis shifted to rehabilitating farmland and linking nature corridor reserves through extensive tree-planting efforts. Approximately 10,000 seeds were collected and 5,000 seedlings were planted on these field trips.
