Meet Our Deputy Dean of College, Diego Rico

Where were you working before joining St Catherine’s College?

I previously held the positions of Residential Life Supervisor and Operations Property Manager at a student accommodation provider in Western Australia.

Before that, I worked for over 14 years in various educational leadership roles, including Deputy General Director of the Department of Education, School Principal, Assistant Principal and Student Engagement Leader in both Colombia and the United States of America.

What made you choose to join St Catherine’s?

I have always been passionate about sharing my life experiences with communities and prioritising quality education and leadership development for young people. Therefore, when I discovered St Cat’s and its core values, I knew I had to apply for a position here.

What do you enjoy most about being Deputy Dean of College?

I am committed to fostering a culture of excellence at St Cat’s where students can celebrate their cultural diversity and learn from each other. It is imperative that all members of our community feel safe, supported and motivated to achieve their full potential.

What advice would you give a new resident?

College is a pivotal period in one’s life and plays a significant role in shaping us into the individuals we are today. With that in mind, I advise new residents to take advantage of the opportunities and resources offered by the College.

I encourage them to explore various clubs, actively participate in weekly activities, attend Faculty and Industry Dinners, and seek academic support from tutors to excel in their studies. Achieving a balance between social life and academics is crucial during their time at College. Networking is also vital to this experience, as it provides opportunities for residents to connect with professionals in their desired fields.

What advice would you give to a parent of a new resident?

I would encourage parents to allow their children to take advantage of this once-in-a-lifetime experience. College is a unique opportunity for students to develop autonomy, responsibility, and maturity and become the courageous leaders of tomorrow.

Trust in the foundation you have built in your children and inspire them to pursue their aspirations with all the opportunities at College.

Outside of College, what are your favourite things to do?

I enjoy visiting the beach and am fortunate to reside in Western Australia, which boasts some of the most breathtaking beaches I have ever seen. I am also passionate about travelling, exploring new cultures, trying different foods and learning about each place's ancient knowledge.

When I’m not out and about, I always have a good book on my nightstand and enjoy every opportunity to spend quality time with my family. We love playing UNO, and we can get quite competitive! It is, however, all in good fun and a cherished pastime that we all enjoy.
