Meet our new Associate Sub-Dean of College, Sam Nonis

What were you doing before joining St Catherine’s College?

I completed my PhD in Biochemistry at The University of Western Australia at the end of 2021.

Prior to that, I was a resident at St Catherine’s for three years of my postgraduate study period, two of which were as a Residential Advisor.

I grew up in Singapore but consider Western Australia my home now. When moved into College, the friendships I made played a large part in easing me into life away from my family.

What made you choose to join St Catherine’s?

Having had such an amazing experience as a St Catherine’s resident, I couldn’t turn down the opportunity to make that a possibility for others!

What do you enjoy most about being Associate Sub-Dean of College?

I enjoy creating an environment that encourages residents to pursue personal growth. I also enjoy staying nimble enough to help St Cat's dominate in the Curtin Housing Cup!

What advice would you give a new resident?

We have a melting pot of people from different backgrounds. You’ll have ample opportunities to learn about various cultures and the norms in other parts of the world. Your mind will be blown by how diverse opinions can get, so be prepared for many interesting conversations!

What advice would you give to a parent of a new resident?

With 400 residents at our Curtin campus and another 400 residents at our UWA campus, there will be someone from whom they can connect and learn from. Your young adult will be in an environment where they can work to become their best version. They may be stepping out of their comfort zone, but we have fostered a community with levels of support, from the friends they make to our Residential Advisors and staff members.

Outside of College, what are your favourite things to do?

I exercise frequently and always enjoy learning a new sport. There's something about working with dough that helps me relax, so I often make bread. I keep in touch with academia as a science editor and as a research associate at the Centre for Crop and Disease Management.
